Lake Viljandi is located beside the city of Viljandi (19.500 citizens) and is known as a favorite place for leisure and vacation. The lake has been natural eutrophic. The ecological status stayed stable during decades. Some rare and protected species inhabit the lake, as the "lake ball" alga (Aegagropila sauteri) and the mud loach fish(Misgurnus fossilis). One peculiarities of the lake is the phytoplankton community dominated by Ceratium hirundinella on recent years. Phytoplankton, macrophytes, fishes and littoral macroinvertebrates will be sampled within WISER.
